A castle is architecture, which makes it the one fantasy subject where getting the structure right matters more than the color. Curtain walls, a gatehouse with a portcullis, arrow slits, a moat and drawbridge, towers at every corner, these were solutions to specific military problems, and the pages that include them look convincing whatever palette you use. These 14 castle coloring pages run from a functioning fortress under siege to a pink-towered fairy tale palace. Every design downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.

Medieval Castle on a Green Hilltop With Towers and Magical Fairy Tale Princess Castle With Spires are the two poles of the set. Castle With Moat and Working Drawbridge is the most instructive if you want the defensive layout. Castle at Night Under a Full Moon With Bats and Castle Gatehouse With Portcullis and Guards carry the most detail.

Stone is where these pages usually go wrong. Filling a wall with one flat gray kills it. Real stonework is a patchwork of slightly different tones, some blocks warmer, some cooler, some darker, so vary your gray block by block, keep the mortar lines lighter than the stone, and deepen everything under the battlements and inside the arrow slits.

Roofs and flags are where a castle page gets its personality. The conical tower roofs in this set read as slate or lead, which is a blue-tinted gray rather than a true gray, and a single red or green pennant is enough to lift an otherwise cold page. Castle Tower With Flag Flying in the Wind is built around exactly that. Two sheets go the other way and let nature take the building back: Castle Ruins Covered in Ivy and Vines and Magical Glowing Castle in an Enchanted Forest hand you moss, ivy and undergrowth, so the stone becomes background rather than subject. Dragon Circling a Castle in the Sky Above and Castle Rising Through Clouds in the Sky set the whole building against open sky, which is the easiest way to make a silhouette read.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you color stone walls so they look like stone?

Vary the tone block by block. Pick one gray and change the pressure from block to block so some read warmer or darker than their neighbors, then leave the mortar lines lighter than the blocks themselves. Push the darkest tone into the shadow beneath overhanging battlements and inside every arrow slit. Uniform gray is what makes a castle look like cardboard.

What are the parts of a medieval castle?

The keep is the strongest inner tower and the last refuge. The curtain wall runs between corner towers and encloses the bailey, the open courtyard inside. The gatehouse controls the entrance and holds the portcullis, a heavy grille dropped to seal it. The moat and drawbridge control approach, and the crenellations along the wall top give archers cover.

What is the difference between a medieval and a fairy tale castle?

Function. A medieval castle is a fortress: thick low walls, few and narrow windows, everything shaped by defense. A fairy tale castle is a fantasy of the nineteenth century, tall slender spires, conical roofs, large windows, modeled on buildings like Neuschwanstein, which was built for effect rather than for war. Both are in this set.

Which castle pages suit younger children?

The hilltop castle, the princess castle with pink towers and the moat-and-drawbridge scene all use bold outlines and large clear shapes. The gatehouse with guards and the interior hallway carry far more architectural detail and suit ages eight and up.

What should we color once the castles are finished?

Ordinary buildings, which are harder than they look and a good next step. Our house coloring pages run from a plain toddler house up to a three story Victorian whose corner turret is roofed in the same fish scale shingles you have just worked through here. The same lighting rule carries straight over: pick one direction for the light, keep every surface facing it paler than every surface turned away, and the building stops looking flat. The row house street and the lighthouse keeper cottage on that hub carry roughly the same amount of stonework as the gatehouse page does.
