Angel Coloring Pages

14 free printable pages, ready to download and print.

Beautiful angel coloring pages featuring guardian angels, cherubs, angels with harps, and heavenly scenes.

Angels are almost always drawn back-lit, which is the interesting part for a colorist: the subject is defined by light coming from behind it rather than by its own color. These 14 angel coloring pages cover guardian angels, cherubs, harps, halos and a Christmas tree topper, and every design downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.

Angel With Halo and Large Feathered Wings and Guardian Angel Watching Over a Sleeping Child are the two clearest starting points. Baby Cherub With Tiny Wings and Bow and Arrow is the one small children choose. For the longest sitting, Angel Blessing Scene With Rays of Light carries the most detail, and Christmas Angel on Top of a Decorated Tree doubles as a December page.

Wings are the technical exercise. They are built in overlapping rows, with short rounded coverts near the shoulder growing into long straight flight feathers at the tip. Color them with a very pale base, add a slightly deeper gray along the lower edge of each row, and leave the top edge of every row white. That row-by-row rhythm reads as feathers far more convincingly than drawing individual barbs.

The remaining sheets vary the pose rather than the subject, and each one moves where the light has to come from. Angel Playing a Golden Harp in the Clouds and Angel Blowing a Long Golden Trumpet both set a metal instrument against pale robes, which is the easiest contrast in the set to pull off. Angel Holding a Glowing Golden Star moves the light source into the figure's hands, so the shadows fall upward across the face. Choir of Angels Singing Together in the Clouds is the busiest page here, and Angel Silhouette With Detailed Wing Feathers inverts the whole approach by keeping the figure dark and the sky bright.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you color white wings without leaving them blank?

Use the palest gray, blue-gray or cream you own and put it only in the shadowed places, the underside of each feather row, where the wing meets the back, and the far wing behind the body. Keep the top edge of every row as bare paper. The contrast between untouched white and a faint gray is what makes white read as white rather than as empty.

How do you color a halo?

Leave the ring itself as bare paper or the palest yellow, and darken whatever sits immediately behind it, hair, sky, background, as much as you are willing to. A halo has no color of its own; it looks luminous only because it is the lightest thing on the page and is surrounded by something darker.

What is the difference between an angel and a cherub?

In art, cherubs are the small winged children, properly called putti, that appear throughout Renaissance and Baroque painting. In the older scriptural tradition cherubim are something else entirely and far stranger: high-ranking, many-winged beings. The cherub in this set follows the familiar art-historical version.

Which angel pages suit younger children?

The cherub with the bow, the angel floating in clouds and the angel with the harp all keep one large figure against an open background. The blessing scene with rays of light is the most detailed and suits older children and adults.
