The unicorn was not always a pastel animal. For most of its history in European writing it was described as fierce and nearly impossible to capture, and the medieval version is closer to a goat or a small horse with a cloven hoof and a spiral horn than to anything rainbow-colored. Both readings are available here. These 15 unicorn coloring pages cover rainbow meadows, enchanted forests, starlit herds and winged variants. Every design downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.

Unicorn Running Through a Rainbow Meadow and Baby Unicorn Nuzzling a Child's Hand are the two most popular and the easiest. Unicorn With a Magnificent Flower Mane and Tail gives the most color permission on one page. Herd of Unicorns Grazing on a Starlit Hillside is the atmospheric one and rewards a colored night sky.

The horn is the one part with a conventional treatment. It is spiralled, so shade it in bands that follow the twist, darker on the underside of each turn, lighter on top, rather than coloring it as a smooth cone. Gold or pearl white are the traditional choices, and either one looks better if the tip is left as bare paper.

The variants are worth knowing about before you print. Unicorn With Sparkling Wings in Flight and Unicorn Racing Alongside a Pegasus cover the winged versions, which are properly alicorns rather than unicorns. Unicorn With a Glittering Spiral Horn Close-Up is the sheet to use if you want to practice the horn on its own at a large scale. The quiet ones are Mini Unicorn Sleeping in a Patch of Flowers and Unicorn Drinking From a Crystal Clear Stream. For a white coat, shade the shadowed side in the palest gray or lilac you own and keep only the top of the back and the muzzle as bare paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What color is a unicorn's horn traditionally?

Gold or pearlescent white in most classical depictions, sometimes with a spiral of a second color running along the twist. The rainbow and pastel horn is a modern invention, and a perfectly good one. Whichever you choose, shading each turn of the spiral separately and leaving the tip white is what stops it looking like a plain cone.

How do you color a rainbow mane?

Work in bands that follow the flow of the hair, not across it, and put the colors in a consistent order so the mane reads as one object rather than a set of stripes. Let neighboring colors overlap slightly where they meet. Keeping the same sequence in the tail ties the two together.

Are unicorns from a specific mythology?

Not one. Single-horned creatures appear in Greek accounts of India, in medieval European bestiaries and tapestries, and the Chinese qilin is a separate tradition often translated as unicorn. The gentle, pale, forest-dwelling unicorn most people picture comes largely from medieval European art, where it was also a religious symbol.

Which unicorn pages suit preschoolers?

The rainbow meadow and the baby unicorn with a child both keep one large figure and a simple background, and work from about age three. The starlit herd and the enchanted forest scenes have more small detail and suit ages seven and up.
