Mermaids give you two completely different surfaces on the same figure: skin and hair above the waist, and a scaled tail below it that catches light like a fish. Handling those two the same way is the most common thing that flattens a mermaid page. These 15 mermaid coloring pages cover reef gardens, sunken treasure, dolphins and sunset rocks. Every design downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.

Mermaid Sitting on Ocean Rocks at Sunset and Mermaid Playing With Sea Creature Friends are the friendliest starting points. Mermaid Discovering a Sunken Treasure Chest and Mermaid Tending Her Coral Reef Garden give the most to fill.

The tail should shift color along its length. Real fish are iridescent, a single scale reads green from one angle and violet from another, so blending from teal at the hips through green to a violet or magenta at the fluke is more accurate than one flat color, and far more striking. Add the scale detail on top in a deeper tone once the blend is down, and leave a broad band of untouched paper running along the top of the tail as a highlight.

The detailed half of the set is where the underwater scenes get properly busy. Mermaid Family in an Underwater Palace and Mermaid Singing to Enchanted Fish carry the most background, while Mermaid Braiding Seaweed Into Her Flowing Hair is the best page for practicing long hair on its own. Mermaid Surfing on a Cresting Wave and Mermaid Watching Shooting Stars From the Ocean Surface are the two surface scenes, and both hand you a sky to color as well as a sea. Mermaid Helping a Sailor on a Wrecked Ship is the most narrative sheet in the set.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you color a mermaid tail?

Blend rather than fill. Start with teal at the top of the tail, move through green, and finish in violet or magenta at the fluke, keeping the transitions gradual. Once the blend is laid down, add the scale edges on top with a sharper pencil in a deeper tone, and leave a wide highlight of bare paper running along the tail's upper surface.

How do you color underwater scenes?

Color the water, do not leave it white. Lay a pale blue across the entire background with even pressure and deepen it toward the lower corners so the depth increases. Leave a few narrow diagonal bands almost uncolored to read as shafts of light from the surface, and small circles of bare paper as bubbles.

What colors should mermaid hair be?

Anything, and the unnatural options work particularly well here, sea green, aqua, coral, deep violet. If you prefer a natural color, keep the hair warm so it contrasts with the cool water and tail; a red or gold head of hair against teal is the strongest combination on these pages.

Which mermaid pages are best for young children?

The mermaid on the rocks, the one playing with sea creatures and the little mermaid peeking above the waves all keep the figure large and the background open. The coral reef garden and the sunken treasure scenes contain far more small detail.
