A working medieval castle sits on top of a steep rounded hill that takes up the whole bottom half of this sheet. The building is compact rather than grand: three square towers of different heights, two runs of battlements with regular square notches, a small pennant on the tallest spire, and a dark arched gateway at the right hand end. Narrow slit windows are cut into the walls at irregular intervals, which is historically correct and gives you a scatter of small shapes to pick out. A stepped path climbs from the gate down the shoulder of the hill and disappears over the edge. The hill itself is the surprise of this page. It is drawn with short broken contour strokes rather than as a smooth shape, so it reads as rough ground, and those strokes are spaced widely enough to color straight over. A few tufts of grass are scattered across the slope. There is no sky, no trees and no border, which means all the visual weight sits low and the top third of the sheet is empty paper. Filling that space with a flat sky color is the single change that makes this drawing look finished.
