Ivy is taking this building apart and the drawing is mostly a portrait of the plant. Thick ropes of leaves hang from the roof line and swag across the front wall in long loops, a second mass climbs the corner tower, and dense beds of flowering shrubs bank up against the base on both sides. Behind all that greenery the hall is still legible: a steep tiled roof drawn as rows of overlapping scales, a square battlemented tower on the left, a small spired turret on the ridge, tall traceried windows with divided panes, and a deep arched doorway reached by a short flight of steps. Every stone in the walls is ruled separately. The leaves are individually outlined too, several hundred of them, and that is the real work of the page. A large faint mandala floats behind the building and delicate scrollwork fills all four corners, both drawn in a much lighter line so they sit back. This is an hour long sheet at least. Vary your greens rather than using one, and let a few leaves go yellow, which is what real ivy does.
