Wolf packs are not gangs of unrelated animals fighting for rank. They are families: a breeding pair and their offspring from the last two or three years, which is why the den scenes and pup scenes in this set are the most biologically honest images in it. These 14 wolf coloring pages cover howling, hunting, the pack run and the arctic subspecies, and each downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.

Simple sheets use bold outlines and open backgrounds. Wolf Howling at a Full Moon on a Rocky Hilltop, Wolf Family With Pups in Their Forest Den and Wolf Cubs Playing and Tumbling Together are the friendliest. Detailed sheets carry heavy fur and weather texture: White Arctic Wolf in a Snowy Tundra Landscape and Wolf in a Winter Storm With Snow Swirling are the longest projects.

Wolf coats are agouti (each individual hair is banded with several colors along its length), which is why a gray wolf photographed close up contains cream, rust, charcoal and brown all at once. Layering three or four of those lightly over each other, rather than choosing one gray, is what separates a convincing wolf from a gray dog.

The remaining sheets follow the pack across a full year. Wolf Pack Running Together Through the Forest and Alpha Wolf Standing Proudly on a Rocky Overlook are the group and portrait pages. Two Wolves Touching Noses Affectionately and Wolf Pup With a Curious Expression and Fluffy Fur are the gentlest here. Wolf Standing in a Snowy Winter Landscape and Wolf Sitting Below a Large Bright Full Moon have the simplest backgrounds in the set, which makes them the best places to spend the saved time on the coat instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the alpha wolf idea true?

Not for wild wolves. The researcher whose 1970 book popularised the term, L. David Mech, has spent decades since asking people to drop it, his original study observed unrelated captive wolves, which behave nothing like wild ones. A wild pack is a family, and the "alpha" pair are simply the parents.

Why do wolves howl at the moon?

They do not, in any meaningful sense. Howling is long-distance communication, locating separated pack members, warning rival packs off territory, and reassembling before a hunt. Wolves are most active at dawn and dusk and often tip their heads back to project the sound further, which is where the moonlit image comes from.

What colors should I use for a gray wolf?

Not a single gray. Layer a light warm base, then charcoal along the back and shoulders, rust or tan on the flanks, ears and legs, and cream on the throat, chest and muzzle. Gray wolves also occur in near-black and near-white, so both of those are accurate too.

Which wolf pages suit younger children?

The howling wolf, the family at the den and the tumbling cubs all use bold, well-spaced outlines. The cartoon wolf with the friendly expression is the simplest in the set. The winter storm and the stalking scene are far denser and suit ages nine and up.
