The den takes up most of this page, drawn as a broad arch of rock with long grain lines running across it and roots or splits breaking the surface near the top. A bare trunk rises on each side, and the right hand one throws out a forked branch above the opening.
Inside sits an adult wolf, facing straight out. Its ruff is built from short repeated strokes around the jaw and chest, its ears stand up in sharp points, and its eyes are narrow ovals left open rather than filled. Three pups are gathered in front of it. The one on the left is the smallest and plainest, with a rounded muzzle and a body of simple curves. The middle and right pups both have pricked ears and the same tufted cheeks as the adult, and each one sits with its front paws planted.
Grass grows in clumps at the bottom corners and a few small stones lie on the den floor. Because the tier is simple, every shape is outlined in one consistent weight with nothing shaded in, so the four animals read clearly even at a glance and the rock face becomes the one place where an older colorist can add texture.
