A wolf stands side on in deep snow with its head turned around to face you, ears up and the mouth closed in a slight smile. Its coat is drawn as short spiky strokes along the chest, the ruff and the long low tail, giving the animal texture without filling any of it in. The eyes are two round pupils with a white highlight left in each, and the nose is a single solid wedge. A row of fir trees holds the horizon in two groups, one to each side of the head, and every tree is an open outline with zigzag branches and clean white paper inside. The ground rolls back in long soft drifts marked by a few contour lines, bare twiggy shrubs stand at the lower left, grass pokes through at the right, and above the trees the sky is left entirely blank.

Those firs are the surprise. Winter scenes usually hand you a solid dark band along the back, and this one does not, so the whole depth of the page is yours to decide.

Keep the wolf paler than the trees or it will sink straight into them.

Wolves hold a territory by voice. A howl carries six miles across open country in cold air, which is cheaper than walking the boundary and safer than meeting whoever is on the far side of it.
