A wolf sits upright in a small clearing and looks off to the left. Trees crowd in on both sides, and their trunks carry long grain marks, knots and peeling strips that run the full height of the sheet. Thin branches reach overhead and carry small pointed leaves. Further back a stand of conifers fades into a lighter, thinner line, which is how the artist built depth without any shading. A band of flowers runs along the bottom edge and two big blooms open in the upper corners.

The composition hands you a genuine choice. Color the animal and leave the woods as line work and it jumps forward. Fill the forest instead and the wolf settles back into it. Both readings work.

We filed this sheet under the detailed tier for good reason. The bark grain in particular is slow going and suits colored pencil far better than a marker tip. Set aside an hour or more. To break it up, finish the wolf in one sitting and come back for the trees another day. Teens and adults are the natural audience, though a younger child can happily take the flower band alone.
