The ocean is the one habitat where you can color an animal magenta and still be accurate. Reef fish, nudibranchs and jellyfish genuinely come in colors that look invented, which makes this set unusually forgiving. These 15 ocean animal coloring pages cover dolphins, sea turtles, octopuses, jellyfish, seahorses, narwhals and reef scenes, and each downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.
Simple sheets use clean outlines and open water. Dolphins Jumping Over Ocean Waves, Sea Turtle Swimming Among Colorful Coral and Octopus Exploring an Underwater Cave are good starting points. Detailed sheets add fine pattern work: Jellyfish Floating in the Deep Ocean and School of Tropical Fish Swimming Together will take an hour or more.
The background is what usually lets an ocean page down. Water left white makes the animals float in a void. Lay a very light blue over the entire background with even pressure, then deepen it toward the bottom corners, and every creature on the page gains depth without you touching them again.
The rest of the set works through the reef and the shoreline. Clownfish Peeking Among Sea Anemones, Shark Swimming Through a Coral Reef and Starfish and Shells on a Sandy Ocean Floor all sit on or near the bottom, where the water should be at its deepest tone. Manta Ray Gliding Gracefully Through the Ocean and Whale Breaching the Ocean Surface are the two large-animal pages, and both are countershaded the way sharks are, dark above and pale below. Crab on a Rocky Shoreline With Waves and Otter Floating on Its Back Holding a Clam are the two surface scenes.
Related line art: Dolphins, Sharks, Mermaids and Ships.
For a hub of fish on their own, the fish coloring pages set adds 15 more sheets, running from a plain bold outline for a toddler up to koi scales that take an adult an afternoon.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you color water so it looks like water?
Cover the whole background in a pale blue at light, even pressure, then build a second and third layer only in the lower part of the page so the color deepens with depth. Leave a few narrow diagonal bands almost uncolored to read as light shafts from the surface. Small circles of bare paper become bubbles.
Are narwhal tusks real?
Yes. The tusk is an enormously elongated left canine tooth that spirals counter-clockwise and can reach nine feet, found mainly on males. It is packed with nerve endings and is thought to be a sensory organ as well as a display. Narwhals live only in Arctic waters, which is why that sheet includes ice floes.
What colors are real tropical reef fish?
Almost anything. Clownfish are orange with white bands edged in black, regal tangs are deep blue with a yellow tail, and parrotfish run through green, teal and pink on the same body. This is the one subject where a full-saturation palette is more accurate than a restrained one.
Which ocean pages suit preschoolers?
The dolphins, the sea turtle, the seahorse and the whale sheets all use large open shapes with thick outlines, and work from around age four. The jellyfish and tropical fish school designs pack in far more fine detail and suit older children and adults.
