A flower is the easiest subject in nature to color badly, because the temptation is to fill each petal with one flat tone and move on. The pages that work are the ones where the petal gets darker at its base, where it curls away from the light, and where two or three shades of the same color sit on top of each other. These 15 flower coloring pages give you plenty of room to practice that. Every design downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.
Simple sheets keep the blooms large. Bouquet of Wildflowers in a Glass Vase, Sunflower Field at Golden Hour and Rose Garden in Full Bloom are the friendliest. Detailed sheets pack in fine petal structure: Garden Poppies Swaying in the Breeze and Peony Bouquet Close-Up With Lush Petals are the densest in the set.
The set is not all soft and temperate. Cactus in Bloom in the Desert and Tropical Hibiscus and Bird of Paradise both ask for a hotter, higher-contrast palette than the cottage-garden sheets, which makes them a useful change of pace.
Several sheets are less about single blooms than about a whole field of them, and those want a different approach: choose the palette first and repeat it, rather than deciding flower by flower. Tulip Field in Spring With a Distant Windmill, Lavender Field With Bees and Daisy Field With Butterflies all reward that discipline. Cherry Blossom Tree With Petals Falling and Magnolia Tree Blossoms are the tree pages, where the trick is keeping the blossoms pale and putting the contrast into the dark branches behind them. Lotus Flowers on a Calm Reflective Pond and Lily Pond With Dragonflies add still water to the job. These are the flowers coloring pages to reach for when the subject is a mass of blooms rather than a single specimen.
More botanical line art: Floral Patterns, Gardens, Bees and Spring. For the plant a seed side of the same subject, Earth Day adds seedlings, tree planting and the recycling symbol.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you shade a flower petal?
Darkest at the base where the petal joins the flower center, lightest at the outer edge. Build the color in two or three light layers rather than one heavy pass, and leave a narrow strip of white paper along the top edge of any petal that curls toward you. That single highlight is what gives a petal its curve.
What colors should I use for a sunflower?
The petals run from lemon yellow at the tips into a deeper gold and then a touch of orange or brown where they meet the disc. The center disc is dark brown to near-black, with a green-brown ring just inside the petals. Coloring the whole flower one flat yellow is the most common mistake and flattens it completely.
Which flower pages are easiest for beginners?
The wildflower bouquet, the sunflower field and the tulip field with the windmill. All three keep the individual blooms large and well separated. The peony close-up and the poppies carry many overlapping petals and much finer linework.
Can I use watercolor on these pages?
Yes, if you print on cardstock first, standard printer paper buckles and the color bleeds across petal outlines. Watercolor pencils are a good compromise: color dry as usual, then blend selected areas with a barely damp brush, which gives soft petal transitions without soaking the sheet.
