Five magnolia blossoms sit close together on a single bare branch that enters from the bottom left corner and runs up across the sheet. The flowers are large and simply drawn, six or seven broad rounded petals apiece, cupped rather than flat, and every one of them is left open and empty inside. At the center of each bloom stands a pointed cone marked with a few short lines, the seed head a magnolia carries before its petals drop. Two small pointed leaves grow off the branch below the flowers, and a single tight bud sits on its own short twig at the far left. The branch itself is the only woody texture on the page, drawn with a scattering of short marks along its length. Everything behind it is blank paper, and that emptiness gives you a choice. Leave it white and the branch reads as a cutting held up against the sky. Lay in a flat background tone instead and the petals will lift straight off it. With so few lines inside the petals, blending works well here.
