This is the sparest page in the collection and that is the point of it. Two lotus flowers sit on a still pond. The first rides a tall slim stem and holds its petals half closed in a pointed cup. The second floats low and wide on a pad to the right, fully open, with a second tier of petals spreading out flat beneath the first. Two round lily pads lie on the surface, one shown as a simple flat oval and one folded slightly at its near edge. A faint line runs across the water behind them, and below it the tall stem and the open bloom both repeat as reflections, softer and less complete than the shapes above. Everything is drawn in one thin even weight with no interior detail at all, and more than half the sheet is untouched paper. Pages like this one are easier to spoil than to finish. Keep the water very pale or leave it alone entirely, put your color in the petals, and let the reflections stay lighter than the flowers that cast them.
