Eight sunflowers fill the front of this sheet, each one turned to face you, and the artist drew their seed heads as solid discs rather than leaving them open. That choice matters when you sit down with it, because the middles are already dark, so the work happens in the petals, the leaves and the landscape behind.
Past the flowers the ground rolls away in curved bands toward a small barn with an open lean-to beside it. Fence posts run along the ridge, and a bank of tall clouds sits above everything with plenty of white paper left in the sky.
Look for the smaller details before you start. Butterflies drift near the top right, bees hover among the stems, and a few half-open buds sit lower down where the leaves overlap.
Broad petals and heavy outlines make this workable for younger children, while the field bands and cloud edges give an older colorist somewhere to slow down.
Sunflower heads track the sun while they grow, an effect called heliotropism. It stops once the flower matures, which is why a ripe field usually faces east together.
