Six roses are fully open on this sheet and each center is drawn as a spiral of overlapping petals that wind inward. Start at the middle of one of those spirals with your darkest shade and let it lighten as you work out toward the outer petals, and the bloom will look deep instead of flat. Around the open flowers are six or seven buds still closed, their petals wrapped tight and held in a small cup of pointed sepals. The stems are long, straight and mostly bare, which lets each flower sit in its own pocket of space. The bottom third belongs to the leaves. They are broad, they come in groups along the stems, and every one has a serrated edge and a clear midrib. Consider giving them more attention than usual, since that mass of foliage is what will make the roses above it look bright. Lines throughout are clean and thick with no shading marks, and the upper right corner is left empty. Classic reds are the obvious choice, though a garden of yellows and creams looks just as convincing.
