A garden is a designed landscape, which makes these pages different from the wild-nature sets: someone in the drawing chose where the path goes. That gives you structure to work with, hedges, beds, gates, glass, and a reason to plan a palette rather than improvise one. These 15 garden coloring pages run from an English cottage border to a Japanese raked-sand garden to a rooftop plot above a city skyline. Every design downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.

Simple sheets keep the planting readable. English Cottage Garden in Full Bloom, Japanese Zen Garden With Stone Path and Raked Sand and Vegetable Garden With Raised Beds and Scarecrow are good first choices. Detailed sheets pack in structure and glass: Greenhouse With Exotic Plants and Hanging Baskets and Garden Pond With Koi and Water Lily Pads take the longest.

The two garden traditions in this set want opposite treatments. A cottage garden is deliberately crowded and clashing, pink next to orange next to purple is correct, not a mistake. A Japanese garden is the reverse: green, gray, sand and a single accent, with the empty raked sand doing as much work as the planting. Coloring either one in the other's palette is the fastest way to lose what makes it recognizable.

Between those two poles sit the pages that reward planning a palette before you start. Formal Garden With Fountain and Trimmed Hedges is almost entirely green and stone, so the fountain is the only place a second color really belongs. Secret Garden Behind an Old Iron Gate and Garden Tool Shed With Climbing Roses both hang planting on built structure. Herb Garden With Labeled Wooden Plant Stakes is the most useful sheet for teaching, because the herbs genuinely differ in leaf color, from the gray-green of sage to the near-black green of rosemary. Autumn Garden With Falling Leaves and Late Blooms is the one seasonal page here.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you color glass on a greenhouse?

Barely. Leave most panes as bare paper and put a very light blue-gray in only some of them, varying which ones so the surface looks reflective rather than uniform. Add one or two panes with a diagonal white streak left uncolored for glare, and let the plants inside show through at reduced contrast, lighter and grayer than the plants outside.

What is a Japanese zen garden?

A karesansui, or dry landscape garden, where raked gravel stands in for water and carefully placed stones stand in for islands or mountains. There is little or no planting, and the raking is redone as a contemplative practice. That is why the design in this set is mostly empty space, and why leaving it that way is the point.

How do you color raked sand patterns?

Follow the drawn lines with a pale warm gray or sand tone, keeping the ridges lighter than the grooves, and let the strokes run the full length of each curve without lifting. Do not fill the whole area evenly, the contrast between ridge and groove is the entire effect.

Which garden pages suit younger children?

The cottage garden, the vegetable garden with the scarecrow and the butterfly garden all have large, clearly separated shapes and a lot of color permission. The greenhouse, the rooftop garden and the koi pond carry much more fine detail.

Which creatures can I add to a garden scene?

The bugs that actually live there. Our bee coloring pages and spider coloring pages both suit the same age range as these garden sheets, and a spider web strung across a fence or a bee resting on a sunflower turns a single garden page into a small habitat set.

What about the house the garden belongs to?

We keep the buildings on a hub of their own. The house coloring pages include a cottage with a flowering vine climbing one wall and a pot of blooms on either side of the door, which is the closest match to the cottage garden sheet here. There is also a two story house seen from the end of a wide paving stone path, and a farmhouse standing beside its barn. Print one of those next to a garden page and you have a whole property to work through rather than a single bed.
