Green is doing all the work on St. Patrick's Day, which is exactly why these pages are worth planning. A sheet colored in one green reads as a single flat shape; the same sheet with a yellow-green shamrock, a mid-green coat and a blue-green hill behind it has depth. These 14 St. Patrick's Day coloring pages cover leprechauns, shamrocks, pots of gold, rainbows, a parade and an Irish harp. Every design downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.
Lucky Four Leaf Clover With Dewdrops and Leprechaun With a Pot of Gold at the End of a Rainbow are the two most-printed. Rainbow Arching Over Green Hills With a Pot of Gold gives the most color permission on one sheet. St. Patrick's Day Parade With Floats and Crowd is the longest project here.
The gold is the other half of the palette and the part most people underuse. Coins are not yellow, they are a warm ochre with a darker brown edge and one small crescent of bare paper left as a highlight on each. A pot with thirty flat yellow discs in it looks like buttons; the same pot with three tones looks like treasure.
The rest of the set fills in the folklore and the symbols. Leprechaun Sliding Down a Rainbow Catching Coins, Leprechaun Dancing a Jig in Green Clothes and Leprechaun Village With Tiny Green Mushroom Houses are the character pages, and the village is the densest sheet in the set. Field of Shamrocks With Rolling Green Hills is the real test of the three-green rule, since almost nothing on it is any other color. Horseshoe and Four Leaf Clover Lucky Charm Design and St. Patrick Himself With Staff and Green Robes round it out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a shamrock and a four-leaf clover?
A shamrock is a young three-leaved clover, and the three leaves are the point, tradition holds that St. Patrick used it to explain the Trinity. A four-leaf clover is a rare genetic variation of the same plant, associated with luck rather than with Ireland specifically. Both appear in this set.
How do you use more than one green?
Assign the greens by distance and by object. A yellow-green for the shamrock leaves and anything catching light, a mid green for clothing and the middle ground, and a blue-green or gray-green for hills further back and anything in shadow. Three greens is enough to give a page depth; one green flattens it completely.
How do you color gold coins?
Three tones, not one. A warm ochre base across the coin, a deeper brown along the lower edge and where coins overlap, and a small crescent of untouched white paper at the top edge as a highlight. Repeating that on every coin is what turns a pile of discs into treasure.
Which pages suit young children?
The four-leaf clover, the shamrock bouquet and the rainbow over green hills all use large clear shapes with plenty of space, and work from about age four. The parade scene and the Irish harp have far more small detail.
