This little man is caught between steps. One foot has landed, the other swings forward, both arms are thrown out for balance, and his beard has lifted away from his chest with the movement. A buckled top hat sits far back on his head, his ears come to a point, and the smile under his mustache is wide enough to show teeth.
His outfit divides into clear pieces to fill. There is a jacket with turned back cuffs, a waistcoat beneath it, a broad belt with a square buckle, trousers to the ankle, short socks and shoes noticeably larger than the feet inside them. The two buckles are the only small shapes anywhere on the sheet.
Nothing has been drawn behind him, so the pose has to carry the page on its own, and it does. Green is the expected choice throughout, but splitting the clothes between two greens and putting the waistcoat in a contrasting tone makes the figure far easier to read once it is finished. Yellow on the hat buckle completes it.
