Fireworks are the single best argument for coloring the background first. A burst drawn against white paper is just a set of lines; the same burst against a fully colored indigo sky is the reason people set them off. These 14 4th of July coloring pages cover fireworks, flags, bald eagles, parades and Uncle Sam. Every design downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.
Fireworks Bursting in the Night Sky Over a City and American Flag Waving in the Breeze are the two most-printed. Kids Sitting on a Blanket Watching Fireworks is the warmest scene in the set. Patriotic Parade With Marching Band and Floats has the most figures and takes the longest.
The flag is worth getting right if the page is going into a classroom: thirteen stripes, starting and ending with red, and fifty white stars on the blue canton. Nobody expects a child to count fifty stars, but the seven red and six white stripes are easy to get correct and the sheet is a painless way to teach it.
The rest of the set splits between more fireworks and the daytime side of the holiday. Fireworks Bouquet Burst With Stars and Streamers, Fireworks Exploding Colorfully Over a City Skyline and Rocket Firework Launching Into the Night Sky all need the dark sky laid down before anything else. Summer Cookout With Hot Dogs, Burgers and Family and 4th of July Celebration Party With Bunting Flags are the daylight pages and the two easiest to finish in one sitting. Liberty Bell With Patriotic Decorations is the history page, and the bell is bronze rather than gold, so a warm brown with green patina in the recesses is closer than yellow.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you color fireworks?
Color the sky first, not the fireworks. Cover the whole background in deep indigo or navy in two or three light layers, then leave the burst trails as bare paper with the brightest color only at their centers, fading outward. A white gel pen is the most reliable way to add sparks over a dark sky afterwards, since no pencil is lighter than the paper.
How many stripes and stars are on the American flag?
Thirteen stripes, for the thirteen original colonies, seven red and six white, beginning and ending with red. Fifty white stars on the blue canton, one per state, arranged in alternating rows of six and five. The current fifty-star design has been in use since 1960, when Hawaii became a state.
Which 4th of July pages suit young children?
The waving flag, the bald eagle and the single fireworks burst all use bold shapes with plenty of open space, and work from about age four. The parade scene has many small figures and instruments, and suits ages eight and up.
Are bald eagles really bald?
No. The name comes from an older sense of "balde," meaning white, a reference to the white head feathers on an adult bird. Juveniles are entirely mottled brown and do not develop the white head and tail until around four or five years old, which is a useful detail if you want to color a young eagle instead.
Where else can I find patriotic coloring pages?
The Veterans Day coloring pages set shares this whole patriotic image set and adds poppies, saluting figures and a blank thank you banner. It is the one to print on 11 November, where these sheets belong to 4 July.
