A mermaid and a single large fish face each other across the middle of this sheet, and the space between them is left open so the exchange reads clearly. She holds both hands together near her chin with her lips parted, her hair falling in long combed waves to her waist, a flower tucked behind one ear and a patterned bodice at her chest. Her tail sweeps down and across the bottom in a wide band of overlapping scales ending in a split fluke. The fish opposite is the surprise: it is drawn with a round eye and an open mouth, and its body carries three separate patterns, fine scale rows on the flank, ruled lines through the fins, and a stippled panel along the back. Around all of this runs a deep border of open blossoms, curling stems and small spirals, heaviest along the bottom edge. Small bubbles drift between the two figures.
