This is the most striking drawing in the mermaid collection and one of the most demanding. An enormous seahorse fills the sheet in profile, its head crowned with a spiral horn and a spiked mane, its curling tail sweeping down to the bottom left corner. Its entire body is armored in overlapping plates, hundreds of them, each drawn as a separate ridged shape, and the tail continues the pattern in rings that shrink to the tip. Riding against its neck is a mermaid with her hair streaming out behind her in long combed ribbons that reach almost to the left edge of the page. Around them the water is described with curling art nouveau flourishes, drifting bubbles and two star shapes, all drawn in a much lighter line so the seahorse stays dominant. There is no background beyond that. The plates are the project. Working them in a slow gradient from dark at the head to pale at the tail tip looks extraordinary, and it takes a steady hour with a fine point. Not a page for a young child.
