A mermaid leans forward over a garden of coral with both hands reaching down toward the plants, and the reef takes up the whole left half and bottom of the sheet. The corals are drawn as several distinct species rather than as one generic mass. Tall branching staghorns spread their arms upward, a bushy soft coral fills the middle, a lumpy brain coral sits near the sand with its surface drawn in curling grooves, and rounded stones and small clustered polyps fill the gaps between them. That variety is what makes the page worth coloring: a real reef is many colors at once, so use six or seven and place them by species rather than blending everything together. The mermaid herself is drawn with clean simple lines, a long fall of hair down her back, a scalloped bodice and a plain smooth tail that curves round to a fluke resting on the seabed. She carries no scale pattern, so she stays quiet while the reef does the talking. The water is left entirely white.
