Summer Coloring Pages

15 free printable pages, ready to download and print.

Summer coloring pages have an advantage no other season does: the reference material is a kid's actual life. A sprinkler, a lemonade stand, a beach, an ice cream truck, these are scenes children can color from memory rather than imagination. These 15 summer coloring pages cover exactly that ground, and each downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.

Simple sheets keep the outlines bold. Children Playing at the Beach in Summer, Ice Cream Truck on a Hot Summer Day and Beach Scene With Sandcastles and Waves work well for younger children. Detailed sheets add crowd and texture work: Lemonade Stand on a Hot Summer Day, Fireflies in a Summer Meadow at Dusk and Summer Carnival With Ferris Wheel and Rides hold attention longer.

Two of these sheets are worth treating differently. The firefly meadow and the family camping scene are both night scenes, which means the usual approach, leave the background white, actively works against them. Cover the sky in deep blue or violet and leave the fireflies, stars and campfire as bare paper, and the drawing does something no daytime page can.

The rest of the set stays in the backyard and the neighborhood. Kids Running Through a Lawn Sprinkler, Summer Barbecue With Family in the Backyard and Children Swimming at the Local Pool are the everyday scenes, and the sprinkler sheet is the best one for practicing water: keep the spray as bare paper and put the color into the grass behind it. Kids Fishing at a Summer Lake, Watermelon Picnic at the Park in Summer Heat and Summer Farm Stand With Fresh Produce and Flowers are the slower ones, and the farm stand gives the most color permission of any sheet in the set.

More seasonal line art: Spring, Ice Cream and 4th of July. Heading to the coast this summer? Dolphins belongs on the same trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you color a night scene?

Color the sky, not around it. Lay a deep blue, violet or indigo across the entire background with even pressure and build it in two or three light layers rather than one heavy one. Leave every light source, stars, fireflies, campfire, lantern, as untouched white paper, and add a faint warm halo around the fire. A white gel pen is the only reliable way to add stars over dark pigment afterwards.

Which summer pages are best for a young child?

The beach scene, the ice cream truck and the sandcastles. All three keep the main subject large with plenty of empty space around it. The carnival and the summer parade have many small figures and suit ages eight and up.

How do you color sand and water so they look different?

Give the sand a warm base, cream or pale ochre, with small darker flecks, and keep the strokes short and irregular. Give the water long horizontal strokes in blue-green, darker at the horizon and lighter toward the shore, with narrow bands of white paper left for foam. The difference in stroke direction does most of the work.

Are these free to print for a summer camp or party?

Yes. Every page is a free printable PDF with no account and no sign-up, so printing a full set for a group costs nothing beyond paper and ink.
