Four people have pulled chairs around a round kettle grill standing on three legs in a backyard. Food is laid across the grate and three ribbons of smoke curl up between them. A woman sits at the left with a small child tucked beside her, a second woman stands at the center reaching in with tongs, and a man sits on the right holding a plate in one hand and a spatula in the other. Behind them runs a slatted screen with long strands hanging from it, and above that a dense canopy of leaves fills the whole top third of the page. A potted plant sits at the left edge, a ring of stones under the grill, and tufts of grass across the front.

That canopy is hundreds of separate leaves. It is the longest job here by far and the most forgiving, since nothing in it has to line up.

One branch at the upper left is drawn as a solid dark wedge. That one is already filled in for you.

The kettle grill was invented in 1952 by George Stephen, who worked at a buoy factory in Chicago. He cut a metal marine buoy in half, put legs on the bottom and used the other half as a lid.
