A wooden stand takes up the middle of this page, built from horizontal planks with a pitched roof and two uprights. Across the top is a large sign board, fixed with a bolt at each corner and left completely blank. Behind the counter a boy stands waiting, chin up, forearms resting on the ledge. On the counter sit a tall jug with a handle, two tall glasses and one smaller one, and a bowl of cut citrus slices. A picket fence runs behind, a leafy plant stands in a pot at each side, and the ground is laid with large paving slabs.

The blank sign is the best thing here. Before any coloring starts, let your child decide what the stand is called and what a cup costs, and write it up there.

The paving slabs at the bottom are big flat shapes that go down fast, which is a good way to finish a page that starts detailed.

The American lemonade stand became a fixture after the 1870s, when cheap ice and cheap sugar arrived at the same time. Before that a cold drink in July was a luxury, not something a child could sell on a corner.
