Nine fireflies drift across the upper two thirds of this page, each one drawn with a pair of long rounded wings held open, a soft body beneath, and two thin antennae curving forward. They are spaced loosely rather than arranged, some higher, some lower, two of them noticeably larger than the rest. Below them, running along the bottom edge, is a narrow band of meadow: tall grass blades, slender stems and a scatter of small open flowers. Everything between is empty paper.

That emptiness is deliberate and it is what makes the page work. There is more white here than drawing, which gives the insects somewhere to float.

If you want dusk, the obvious move is to fill the sky and leave the fireflies pale. It takes a long time with a pencil and the result is worth it, because the contrast is the only thing that can suggest they are lit.

Fireflies are beetles, not flies, and their light is almost perfectly efficient. Nearly all the energy comes out as light rather than heat, which is why you can hold one in a closed hand and feel nothing at all.
