A ferris wheel dominates the middle of this fairground, twelve open cars hung around a rim with straight spokes running in to a hub and an A frame holding the whole thing up. To its left stands a round booth under a striped canopy with a pennant on top, a pair of doors and three portholes along the side. To its right a smaller carousel turns under a scalloped roof, with one horse and a rider just visible beneath it, and a flag on a pole behind. Three tiny figures walk the ground between the rides. A single line marks the ground, and the top half of the page is empty sky.
The wheel is the gift. Twelve identical cars going round a circle is exactly the structure that makes a repeating color sequence look intentional, and a child who gets that right once will do it on every wheel they ever draw.
Keep the people tiny and pale. They are there for scale, and coloring them boldly makes the rides look like models.
George Ferris built the first one for the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, after the organizers asked for something to rival the Eiffel Tower. It carried more than two thousand people at a time.
