A square nosed ice cream van sits parked at a slight angle, close enough to count the stock. Two oversized cones are mounted on the roof, one swirled high and one squat, with a tall pole beside them. A scalloped awning runs the length of the roof edge, and under it an open serving hatch shows a counter lined with more cones. The cab has a windscreen with a single wiper, round headlamps and a three bar grille, and two wheels with plain hubcaps carry the body. Flowering bushes crowd in behind, and two outlined clouds sit in the sky.

The van breaks into big flat panels, which makes it an easy sheet to start and a hard one to make dull. Vans like this are traditionally painted in two or three strong colors with the panels picked out separately, and copying that gets a better result than one shade all over.

The cones on the roof and the cones in the hatch are the same shapes at two sizes, so they are a tidy place to repeat a scheme.

Soft serve exists because of a breakdown. In 1934 a delivery truck carrying ice cream broke an axle, and the man selling the melting stock found people liked the softer texture better.
