The unicorn is running here, caught in full stride from the side with the front legs gathered and the back legs pushing off, mane and tail blown flat behind. A broad rainbow of four narrow bands arcs across the whole width of the sheet behind it, rising from the left edge and dropping away to the right, and a low hill line runs underneath. The entire foreground is meadow, drawn as hundreds of small loose grass strokes with round headed flowers standing up on thin stems among them. Outlines are thick and confident. This is a good one for a four to seven year old.
That foreground is far too fussy to fill stroke by stroke, so do not try. Lay one green across the whole meadow, then go back over the flower heads in two bright colors. Ten minutes of work and the field reads properly.
Whether a galloping horse ever has all four feet off the ground at once was argued about for years, until Eadweard Muybridge lined up a row of cameras in 1878 and proved that it does.
