This unicorn is asleep and curled into itself, head tucked down against a folded foreleg, eyes closed under long lashes. The mane pours out to the right in wide combed waves and the tail sweeps around to the left, and together they take up more of the sheet than the animal does. A thick wreath of flowers rings the whole thing: broad open blooms with round buttoned centers along the bottom, smaller five petal blossoms packed in above, and a corner of paisley scrollwork in the top left. Two of the hooves are already inked solid black.
Those black hooves are useful rather than a nuisance. They fix the darkest point on the page, so you can judge every other value against them and avoid the common problem of the whole sheet drifting pale.
A sleeping horse is worth knowing about. Adults doze upright, locking a tendon arrangement in the hind legs so they can rest without holding themselves up, and they only lie flat out like this for the deep sleep, which they take in short spells of half an hour or less.
