The head and neck fill the whole frame at three quarter view, cropped close enough that the muzzle almost touches the left edge. The spiral horn runs up into the top corner and has been filled with dense stipple so that it reads as glitter rather than smooth bone. The ears carry the same speckled treatment on their inner edges, the single visible eye is large and heavily lashed, and the mane breaks into dozens of separate strands that cover the right half of the sheet. Loose swirls and three stippled flower heads sit in the background.

Because the horn is already dark, it holds its own without help. Work the mane instead, and work it in strands rather than as one mass: pick two or three related colors and alternate them from strand to strand, letting a few stay white.

Europe traded in unicorn horn for centuries and paid enormous sums for it. What changed hands was almost always a narwhal tusk, which is spiraled, straight and up to nine feet long, brought south by whalers who knew exactly what they were selling.
