A scarecrow stands in the middle of this page with both arms held straight out to the sides. It wears a tall floppy hat with a wide brim and a band tied around the crown, and straw sticks out from under it on both sides. The face is round and friendly, with two large eyes, a small nose and a stitched curving smile.
A scarf is knotted at the throat above a buttoned jacket, and the trousers below carry a light pattern of curls. Bundles of straw burst from the ends of both sleeves and from the bottoms of both trouser legs, and the figure is mounted on a single post driven into the ground.
All around it the garden is thick with growth. Wide open daisies and layered blooms crowd in from the bottom corners, long pointed leaves push up between them, and a butterfly with patterned wings hovers at the upper right. One small flower near the bottom left has a face of its own. The sky behind is filled edge to edge with tight spirals, and a scrolled border of vines and flowers runs around all four sides of the sheet.
