This is a decoration rather than a scene, and it is built to be perfectly symmetrical. A swag of fabric is gathered at both upper corners into rosettes with long pleated tails, and from it hangs a panel of vertical stripes that falls to the bottom of the page. A large five pointed star sits at the center of the swag, with smaller stars stepping away to both sides, and a larger one again rises above the whole arrangement. Behind and around it, fine scrollwork curls outward in matching pairs, filling the top and bottom corners with foliage, flourishes and small blossoms.

Because it is a mirror image left to right, the easiest way to color it is in pairs. Do one side, then match it. Children who find that satisfying find it very satisfying; those who do not can break the symmetry deliberately and get something better.

The striped panel is the only large plain area and gives the eye somewhere to rest.

Hanging a bunting swag with the blue field on the left is the convention, and the reason the stripes here run vertically rather than horizontally: a flag being used as drapery is meant to be clearly not a flag.
