A parade crosses this page from edge to edge. In the middle a wheeled float carries several figures in tall top hats, one of them leaning out over the side rail, with a swag of fabric draped along the front. Two large flags fly above it on poles, and a third is carried on the right. Marching alongside on both sides is a band: trumpets and horns raised to lips, a tuba curled around the player at the right, a bass drum behind. Everyone wears a tailcoat and a top hat. Plain buildings close off the background.

There is a lot going on, and that is the point. Count the hats, count the instruments, find the drum.

With this many figures, picking two or three colors and repeating them across the band will look far better than giving every musician a different coat.

A sousaphone, the tuba that wraps around the player, exists because John Philip Sousa wanted an instrument that pointed its sound up and over a marching band rather than behind it. The first one was built to his description in 1893.
