Uncle Sam stands square in the middle of an otherwise empty page with both hands on his hips and his elbows out. The hat is the joke: a top hat so tall it takes up the entire upper third of the drawing, striped from brim to crown and banded with three stars just above the brim. Beneath it he has a long nose, a full white mustache, a pointed goatee and small round eyes. He wears a bow tie, a tailcoat open over a vest marked with two more stars, striped trousers and heavy round toed boots.

All the stripes run the same way, which makes this an unusually good sheet for a child practicing control. Hat, trousers and vest all reward the same careful hand, and the coat gives them a large plain area to relax into afterward.

The figure is tall and narrow with white on both sides, so there is room to add a flag or a crowd if anyone wants to.

Uncle Sam is traced to Samuel Wilson, a meat packer in Troy, New York who supplied the army in 1812. Barrels stamped U.S. were joked about as coming from Uncle Sam, and the name stuck to the government itself.
