Two lines of bunting sweep across the top of this page, hung from pinned corners and dipping in the middle, each strung with a row of triangular flags. Some of the triangles are plain and some are dotted. At each end a folded paper rosette is fanned out against the wall with ribbon tails hanging loose below. Underneath the bunting, large hollow block letters spell out the date, with a small sunburst between them. Stars and round dots of several sizes are scattered through the space below.
The letters are the main event. They are drawn as big open outlines with plenty of room inside, so they can be filled flat, striped, dotted or patterned, and they are large enough that a young child will not struggle.
The bunting triangles are the repeating element, and alternating two colors along each string is the quickest way to make the page look finished.
Bunting started at sea. Ships dressed overall by running signal flags from bow to masthead to stern on celebration days, and the paper version on land is a direct copy of it.
