The bell hangs at the center of this page from a heavy wooden yoke, held by iron straps with the headstock and pins all drawn. Its body widens from a narrow shoulder to a flared rim, crossed by two decorated bands, and on the waist between them sits a crest with an eagle, wings spread, surrounded by scrollwork. The clapper shows just below the lip. Around all of this runs a thick wreath: large open flowers, trailing ribbons with bows, leaves and a scatter of five pointed stars, closing in a loop that fills every corner.
The wreath will take longer than the bell. Dozens of separate petals, each one closed, which is the kind of work that suits an evening and a sharp pencil.
Note there is no crack drawn here and no inscription, so this is the bell as an emblem rather than as the object in Philadelphia.
The real bell cracked on its first test ring in 1752, was recast twice, and cracked again for good in the nineteenth century. It has not been rung since, though it is still tapped gently every Fourth of July.
