Transportation is the category small children ask for by name, usually because of one specific vehicle. That is why this set is deliberately mixed, bus, plane, fire truck, police car, bicycle, hot air balloon, rather than fifteen variations on a car. Every one of these 15 transportation coloring pages downloads as a free printable PDF sized for US Letter paper.
Colorful School Bus Full of Waving Children and Fire Truck Rushing to an Emergency With Lights On are the two most-printed. Bicycle With Training Wheels Decorated With Streamers is the one children recognize as theirs. Hot Air Balloon Floating Over a Town and Airplane With Smiling Passengers in the Sky are the best of the set for a colored sky.
Most of these vehicles have a real, fixed color, school buses are yellow, fire trucks red, police cars black and white, and there is a reason worth passing on: those colors were chosen to be seen. Using them accurately is a small lesson in why vehicles look the way they do. The hot air balloon and the bicycle are the two where anything goes.
The detailed sheets widen the set well beyond the road. Spaceship Launching Into Space With Smoke and Flames and Submarine Exploring the Ocean Depths are the two extremes, and both need their background filled in rather than left white. Vintage Double Decker Bus in a City and Motorcycle on an Open Winding Road are the busiest street scenes, while Sailboat on a Sunny Day With Birds and Helicopter Landing on a Hospital Rooftop cover water and air. Steam Train Chugging Through the Countryside is the gentlest of the larger vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which transportation pages suit toddlers?
The school bus, the fire truck and the bicycle all use bold outlines with large panels and few internal lines, which works from about age three. The hot air balloon over a town and the airplane with passengers have more background detail and suit ages five and up.
Why are fire trucks red and school buses yellow?
Both for visibility, decided differently. Fire engines have been painted red since the earliest volunteer companies, partly by tradition and partly because red was distinctive, though some modern fleets use lime-yellow, which tests better in low light. School bus yellow was standardised in the United States in 1939 specifically because it stands out at dawn and dusk and black lettering reads clearly against it.
How do you color a hot air balloon?
Work in the panels the drawing already gives you. Choose three or four colors and repeat them around the envelope in a fixed order rather than picking a new color for each panel, since real balloons are sewn from repeating gores. Color the sky behind it, and shade one side of the balloon slightly deeper so it reads as round.
Are these free to print for a nursery?
Yes. All 15 are free printable PDFs with no sign-up, no account and nothing licensed, so class sets and group activities are fine.
