Almost all of this page is rock. Two gorge walls rise steeply on either side, and both are scored with long vertical grain lines that follow the fall of the cliff from top to bottom. There are dozens of these narrow strips and they are the real work here. Run a set of related browns, rusts and grays down them, keeping neighbors slightly apart, and the stone gains depth without needing a smudge of shading anywhere.

The train crosses the upper third on a bridge of cut blockwork, its single arch ringed with a neat course of wedge-shaped stones. It is a modern service: a streamlined power car at the head, then carriages with long rows of square windows and vents along the roof. Those window rows are small and repetitive, and a fine pen suits them far better than a crayon.

Far below, a river threads down the floor of the ravine as a thin pale ribbon between the rocks. It is the coolest thing in the scene and the natural home for your only blue.

The sky above the bridge is left untouched, which keeps the eye on the drop underneath it.
