Four boats are bunched together on this sheet, close enough that their sails overlap, which is exactly what the middle of a race looks like. Each one carries a tall mainsail ruled across with broad horizontal bands and a plainer headsail in front of it, and all four heel the same way as they run toward the right. Those banded sails hand you an obvious pattern to play with. Alternate two shades up each sail and the fleet reads as a set of racing colors even in a line drawing.

A small ring buoy floats out to the right of the boats, spoked like a wheel, and a plain round float bobs in the water below it. Between them they are the marks the fleet is racing around.

A single straight horizon crosses behind the sails. Below it the sea builds from a few light ripples near the hulls into deep rolling rows that fill the bottom half of the paper. Those rows are wide and forgiving, good for a young colorist who wants to cover ground fast. Above the horizon line the sky is left bare.
