This locomotive is rounding a curve and heading straight toward the bottom of the page, close enough that you can see the rivets on its smokebox door, the lamp above it, and the slatted cowcatcher across the front. An enormous plume of smoke billows from the stack and fills the entire top left of the sheet in rolling puffs. The track runs back over wooden ties, the passenger cars trail behind on an arched stone viaduct to the right, pine trees crowd the left slope, and mountain ridges close off the horizon. Steam engines were mostly black, and that is worth honoring, but flat black across the whole boiler will bury all that lovely detail. Use a very dark gray instead, then add true black only in the deepest recesses, and every rivet and band will survive. A red or brass trim line along the running board lifts the machine considerably. The smoke should stay nearly white with the faintest shading along its underside. Deep green pines and a pale mountain range finish the scene without stealing focus.
