The locomotive rolls down the track at an angle, close enough that the front of the smokebox faces you square on. A spoked plate covers it, a lamp sits above, and a tall stack sends up a billow of smoke that drifts across the top of the sheet in one big soft mass. That cloud is the easiest place to start, and a very light gray or blue over it keeps the sky from going flat.
A slatted plow hangs low at the front. Behind the cab a tender and a string of coaches curve away to the right and shrink toward the treeline.
Three peaks stand along the skyline with their ridges marked in a few strokes, and fir trees gather at both edges of the picture. The rails come from the bottom left corner with their sleepers drawn one at a time.
Nothing anywhere on this page is intricate, which is rather the point of it. Bold outlines, generous open areas, and a scene a child can finish in one sitting without losing interest halfway through.
