This one is a proper afternoon's work. A miniature village sits on the layout with its houses packed shoulder to shoulder, and every roof is tiled or shingled with a texture of its own. There are gabled cottages, a half timbered inn with a balcony, a tower carrying a clock face, outside staircases, awnings, market stalls, barrels and a scatter of seated figures no bigger than a fingernail.
Three peaks rise behind the rooftops with soft swirling cloud worked in around them, and a large ornamental rosette hangs in the sky above like a compass. Flowers spill across both lower corners.
Two runs of track curve through the foreground, sleeper by sleeper, with a single freight wagon standing at the bottom right. Following one rail all the way around the bend with a fine pen is oddly satisfying.
Because the detail sits so tight together, pencils will serve you better than markers. A useful approach is to choose three shades for the roofs and repeat them across the village, which pulls the whole cluster into one place instead of letting it turn into confetti.
