Five faces are watching you go past. A bear cub has the square window up in the cab at the front, and behind it four tall arched openings hold a lion with a full ruff of mane, a second bear resting both paws on the sill, and a pair of monkeys, the nearer one with a hand raised in greeting. Each animal is drawn in a soft cartoon style with round cheeks and simple features, so this is a friendly sheet rather than a fussy one.

A scalloped valance runs the length of the roof. Under the windows, a long board carries six large five-pointed stars that shrink as the carriage recedes from you. Those stars are the obvious place to be bold: give each one its own shade and the whole flank of the wagon turns into a circus poster.

Two spoked wheels turn at the near end with a smaller one behind, and the track sweeps diagonally across the bottom of the page on long rails and close-set crossties.

Everything above the roofline is bare paper. A striped big top on the horizon, or bunting strung between poles, would finish the journey this carriage is so clearly on.
