A little steam engine rolls toward you wearing a grin. Its smokebox is the face: two wide eyes with a bright catchlight in each, curved eyebrows, a round button nose and an open smile. The boiler behind it is banded like a barrel, the funnel stands tall with one soft puff rising from it, and a small dome sits between them.
Thick confident outlines carry the whole drawing and almost nothing is shaded, so a young child can work fast without having to stay inside fiddly gaps. The buffers on the front beam are plain cylinders. The cab window is one square. Six wheels show along the side, three of them spoked, and a small wagon follows at the back.
Track runs off toward the bottom left as two long rails with rounded sleepers between them, and the rest of the paper is left completely open. That emptiness is deliberate and it is worth filling. Add a station, a hillside, a tunnel mouth or a sky full of cloud and the sheet turns into a scene rather than a portrait. Bright primary shades suit this engine best.
