Tractor Race At A County Fair

A tractor rolls down the track in profile while the fair watches. There is a lot happening around the vehicle: a bunting flag on a tall pole to the left, a crowd pressed against a low wall with arms raised, a long striped awning over a grandstand packed with spectators, and a row of heads along the very bottom of the sheet, as though you are standing in the crowd yourself.

The tractor is drawn plainly against all that activity, with a boxy cab, a stepped hood and two very different wheels, the rear one much taller than the front.

The challenge and the fun of this page is the crowd. There are dozens of small figures and no two need to match, so it is the rare sheet where you can use every color in the box without the result looking chaotic. Keep the tractor to one or two strong shades so it stays the subject, give the awning bold alternating stripes, and let the spectators be as mixed as you like. Working the crowd in sections rather than straight across will stop the colors clumping.
