Two subjects share this sheet and they need different treatment, which is what makes it useful practice. The farmer is drawn small and simple: a round face under a wide brimmed hat, two dot eyes, a curved smile, and a pair of dungarees with a bib and straps over a long sleeved top. His hands meet in front of him and his boots rest on the step, so the whole figure is a handful of closed shapes with no fussy folds. The tractor under him is much bigger and supplies the large areas. A tall exhaust stack rises beside the bonnet, a band of short grille lines marks the front, and the rear wheel is enormous, a set of plain rings inside a heavy rim with a curved guard sweeping over the top. A smaller wheel holds the nose. Behind the seat a steering wheel is drawn as a simple ring. The ground is a flat oval rather than a straight line, which gives the machine somewhere to sit without adding a landscape. Above it the page is bare.
