This icebreaker fills an oval medallion, shouldering forward while broken plates of ice tilt and scatter beneath it. The flared bow wears a band of swirls and circles, a chain runs down from the stem, and the housing behind carries a long row of windows under a squat funnel. A tall lattice mast climbs past the rigging toward the top of the oval. Low mountains sit on the horizon to either side of the hull.
Behind all of it, a fine pattern of scrolls and blossoms fills the sky, and the oval itself is wrapped in thick scrollwork with a flowering cluster at each corner. It is a dense sheet, so plan before you start.
One approach that works: treat the ice as the lightest area on the page, hold the vessel in mid tones, and push the background pattern darker so it lifts clear. Fine liners handle those sky scrolls better than pencils do. The ice plates have flat faces and hard edges, which makes them forgiving to shade even when the rest looks daunting.
