Six oarsmen pull together aboard an ancient galley while their commander stands forward in a crested helmet with one arm raised. Every rower wears a helmet and a short tunic, and their oars angle down through the surface in a neat row. The hull carries two bands of ornament: a Greek key meander along the upper strake and a line of tight spirals below it. A square sail hangs from the yard with its panels marked off by vertical seams, and a long pennant streams back from the masthead.
The whole scene sits inside a heavy decorative frame. Solid dark flourishes anchor each corner, and slim panels of diamonds and rosettes run down the left and right edges. Fine horizontal strokes carry the sea from edge to edge, with small curls breaking the surface.
Save the frame for last. Work the ship, then the water, then bring one accent tone into the border so it reads as a surround rather than a second picture. That meander band rewards a small tip and a slow hand.
